Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The cause of MS is still unknown. Scientists believe the disease is triggered by environmental factors in a person who is genetically predisposed to respond. MS symptoms are variable and unpredictable. No two people have exactly the same symptoms, and each person’s symptoms can change or fluctuate over time. One person might experience only a few of the possible symptoms while another person may experience many more symptoms. Because fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of MS, everyday activities can become more difficult. Other symptoms include difficulty walking and making small movements, trouble with memory, weakness in arms and legs, and depression. Any or all of these can make it hard to keep-up with ordinary activities such as getting to medical appointments, running errands, visiting friends, grocery shopping, simple housekeeping tasks, personal grooming, and preparing meals. Effective care strategies can help modify or slow the disease, treat relapses, manage symptoms, improve personal functions and safety, and address emotional health.
